I have spoken with Calvin Arnold and Tommy Brown about the Liz 45 and thought I had written about it at some point but evidently not. A lot of these older blog entries could easily be updated as I’ve learned more, I’m afraid. The Liz label was Michigan based, but financed by Tommy Brown (wife: Liz Lands) and Tommy was trying to get the Gardenias noticed by Motown (unsuccessful). He was able to then land the record with the Georgia-based King subsidiary label, Fairlane. I also have a copy of the Liz 45, but didn’t get it until after this blog entry had been published. Good observation though!

So there must be a chapter missing with Calvin’s recollection; a 45 exists (I own it) of The Fabulous Gardenias singing “It’s You, You, You” / “What’s The Matter With Me” on Liz #1004, which must predate the Fairlane release. It was mastered in Chicago by Sheldon, and both tracks are credited to Loyd-White-Dixon with no mention of Calvin Arnold.
Would love to know more about this Liz release.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Does anyone know if he died in Atlanta, and if his wife Betty is still in Atlanta, The last time I spoke with him was in 1973. He called my parents home, and I just happened to be there. I think he told me he had 2 sons. I too wish I could get in touch with his wife. If anyone has her number, PLEASE let me know. I would really very much appreciate it. Hugh will definitely be remembered and missed. He really left his mark in this world.
